The world hates change....

... yet it is the only thing that has brought progress - Charles Kettering

So our bead fair season is well and truly underway which is lovely. I'm still quite new to bead fairs so I'm still learning the ropes really. The Scottish Bead Fair in Perth was a real eye opener and the customers as well as my fellow bead shop friends were amazingly supportive, constructive with their criticism and I have been invited back in August. Fab! I was at Doncaster Bead Fair on Sunday and it also was a great ...

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over....

... It turned into a butterfly!

I'm not going to apologise for the lack of blogging over the past few months as I'm sure you will appreciate that it has been a tricky start to the year for Rosewill Cottage but things are on the up!

Just to fill you in on the background I have now left Northumbria University so that I can concentrate on the shop full-time for a while. So in the space of three weeks I have had time to introduce a load of exciting new things!

We have the pleasure of being able ...

Moving to pastures new

Building a Creative Hothouse

It was with deep sadness that I handed in my notice to the landlords of the Park View shop but there is no time to wallow in the doldrums. We are moving to our new shop based on 148 Tynemouth Road, North Shields near the fish quay and the law courts, in three weeks time. We plan to be open there on Monday 3 September after closing Park View down on Saturday 1 September 2012.

Preview - Summer Gemstone Stock

Posted by Dawn McLean on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, In : Rosewill Cottage

New Gemstones are coming!......

I got word yesterday that our gemstone order had been shipped from the warehouse so now we're patiently awaiting for them to wing their way over the Alantic Ocean and sit in customs a little while. We're expecting to have the box of delights in the shop on Monday, 21 May 2012.

So in the meantime we have set up a preview folder in our online shop so you can see what we are excited about.

This year along with a few staples we have gone for the summery peachy pink...

The high street – From a different perspective

I had my eyes opened last night whilst watching ‘Titanic 100 Mystery Solved’ so I thought I should share my thoughts.

Titanic Charm available for £20 from Charmed.
Click the pic to go to their website.

My brother has been infatuated with this luxury white star liner since he was little and has always updated me on the latest theories but what this latest Titanic programme stated in its summary made me think about things a little diffe...

Goodbyes

Some of you may know that our lovely Katie is off to trek around the far east, which will be amazing!  Katie is a firm favourite with our youngsters and elders so she will definitely be missed! It's such a fantastic opportunity and we wish her a safe adventure and luckily we will see her back in August or September.

I can't wait to welcome Katie back but she will be embarking on a whole new adventure on the route to becoming a teacher in September so it may be only on a limited basis....

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Misconceptions

Most cuckoos are gorgeous looking birds and the majority of this species actually raise their own young, but it is correct that a few members of the species are in fact brood parasites and will happily lay their eggs in another kind hearted birds nest. It's nothing personal they just can't be bothered to build their own nest and look after their own.

However, it has taking this little fact about a couple of cuckoo species for them ...

Pop Up Shops at Rosewill Cottage

It's been a long time since I wrote our last blog piece and there is simply no reason for this to be the case as there is a lot going on behind the scenes at Rosewill Cottage which we could have blogged about, it's just we've been short on time.

We've secured some really good booking from the North Tyneside Art Studio at the Linskell Centre, North Shields. We've also taken a few bookings from
care homes in Newcastle upon Tyne to compliment the bookings we hav...

Another Bloomin' Christmas

Posted by Dawn McLean on Thursday, December 29, 2011, In : Rosewill Cottage

Another Fantastic Year!

We just wanted to say a huge big thank you to everyone who has supported us over 2011. Whilst it isn't quite over yet we are very much looking forward to the New Year with lots of changes a foot.

Three stops

1.Looking back at where we have been and worrying about what other people are doing.

2.Doubting the success of our little shop as our customers really do seem to love it.

3.Hoarding all the work and delegate! Thus a new post for a Virtual Assistant (See the about...

Mary Portas - Queen of the High Street

Posted by Dawn McLean on Friday, December 16, 2011, In : Mumpreneur

The musings of a Mumpreneur....

Britain used to be a nation of shop keepers and those of us that are sticking it out through the most drastic times in retail history were waiting with baited breath to find out what Mary Portas would recommend in her high street report. I for one was disappointed with what I read, but there again I read it in a national newspaper and this was my big mistake. Mary's report is very insightful and amazingly optimistic. Just like me?!

I am by no stretch of the ima...

Gemstone to watch - Anhydrite

Posted by Dawn McLean on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, In : Gemstone to watch

Gemstone to watch

Anhydrite

Most people prefer to call Anhydrite by the name Angelite or Angel Stone but despite it's pretty sky colour, which is a base colour of opaque pale glacier blue with snow white flecks, this gemstone isn't really a popular choice of gemstone for jewellery designers at the moment.

Personally I prefer to call it angelite and I have made many pieces of memorial jewellery using this gemstone, often incorporating a simple locket.

The ladies I have had the honour of making t...

Gemstone of the week - Demantoid Garnet

Posted by Dawn McLean on Monday, December 12, 2011, In : Gemstone of the week

Gemstone of the Week

Demantoid Garnet

It's no secret that garnet is the birthstone of people born in January but I wondered if I could find some unusual members of the garnet family because not everyone born in January likes the sumptious deep red colour of garnets.

Garnet is possibly a name derived from the middle English term 'gernet' which means dark red. They are perceived to be a stone stone of purity and truth. It is also supposed to be a symbol of love and compassion. If you place a piec...

Have craft fairs had their day?

Posted by Dawn McLean on Monday, November 7, 2011, In : craft fairs

I used to sell a lot of my jewellery from the Rosewill's Charms range at craft fairs but it seems that the craft fair is somewhat struggling in the North East at the moment.

Customer's give the impression that they want to have extremely cheap items or actually non handmade items at all which is a huge shame giving the amount of talented people out there. So are craft fairs really delivering what customers want?

There seem to be more craft fairs than you can shake a stick in the run up to Chri...

A Year in the Life as a Mumpreneur

Posted by Dawn McLean on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, In : Mumpreneur

With Rosewill Cottage due to celebrate its first birthday in October, I thought I should take you on a frank and honest account of my journey in the year in the life as a Mumpreneur.

I’ve learnt a lot over the last year. It wasn’t just a steep learning curve but an almost vertical climb instead, so where do you start?

In September, I had recently launched the new website for Rosewill’s Charms, my jewellery range which was featured in the Daily Mail after I designed some accessories and ...
