Good-bye Millbrooke!

Posted by Dawn McLean on Monday, September 17, 2012, In : Mumpreneur

49-51 Scrogg Road soon to be demolished

I was four-ish when we moved into the house where my Mum still lives. Across the road was Millbrooke a grand old building which used to be a Dr Banardo's home and a smaller more modest building (No.49) next door. A lady who lived further down the street used to tell my brother and I stories about the children who lived there and how grand the building was. That it used to be a happy place with children's laughter. It's strange that it closed down in 1965...

What a Calamity!

Posted by Dawn McLean on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, In : Mumpreneur

This is a very long post dedicated to my version of the #toonflood nightmare

Walking Rosie to school this morning was a bit of a humbling experience.

A neighbour's livingroom in the garden waiting collection

I don’t often walk Rosie to school but I don’t have a car at the moment as my husband needs to use it for reasons you shall see later. Whilst walking past the gardens of our not so fortunate neighbours we could see their flood damaged carpets, laminate flooring, furniture and be...

What do you need to consider before selling your handcrafted goods?

Posted by Dawn McLean on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, In : Mumpreneur

Ignorance is not bliss!

It has come to my attention that not everyone knows where they stand regarding the legalities of being a crafter who chooses to transfer their hobby into a business. I'm not an expert on the legal world by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought I do some research on it.

It is hard to stay within the law if you don't know it so I advise you check out all the legal information for yourself too. One thing for sure stating "I didn't know." will not cut it in toda...

The true beneficiaries of Rosewill Cottage

Posted by Dawn McLean on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, In : Mumpreneur

Let me introduce you to my lovely family...

"Rosie Ribbons" who simply wants to be happy and run Mummy's shop. I'm not sure what Sarah-Jane would think of that concept though. I love both of my children to smitherenes. Rosewill is a combination of their two names. The fine young fella in the background is my long suffering husband! Since I set up my shop I've hardly seen them, I work so hard to hopefully provide a better lifestyle for them all and as a thank you I have received a lot of white ...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Misconceptions

Most cuckoos are gorgeous looking birds and the majority of this species actually raise their own young, but it is correct that a few members of the species are in fact brood parasites and will happily lay their eggs in another kind hearted birds nest. It's nothing personal they just can't be bothered to build their own nest and look after their own.

However, it has taking this little fact about a couple of cuckoo species for them ...

Mary Portas - Queen of the High Street

Posted by Dawn McLean on Friday, December 16, 2011, In : Mumpreneur

The musings of a Mumpreneur....

Britain used to be a nation of shop keepers and those of us that are sticking it out through the most drastic times in retail history were waiting with baited breath to find out what Mary Portas would recommend in her high street report. I for one was disappointed with what I read, but there again I read it in a national newspaper and this was my big mistake. Mary's report is very insightful and amazingly optimistic. Just like me?!

I am by no stretch of the ima...

A Year in the Life as a Mumpreneur

Posted by Dawn McLean on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, In : Mumpreneur

With Rosewill Cottage due to celebrate its first birthday in October, I thought I should take you on a frank and honest account of my journey in the year in the life as a Mumpreneur.

I’ve learnt a lot over the last year. It wasn’t just a steep learning curve but an almost vertical climb instead, so where do you start?

In September, I had recently launched the new website for Rosewill’s Charms, my jewellery range which was featured in the Daily Mail after I designed some accessories and ...
